Meet our new robot, GAEA!
by Aila Ikuse
It is that time in the build season, the time to name our robot! Last week the team sent in a multitude of ideas that ranged from Martron Lynch to the winning name GAEA. As a team, we voted on the names and GAEA was the top contender.
GAEA (Grabber Actuated Elevator Automaton) was the perfect fit for several reasons. In Greek mythology, Gaea is the primal goddess of Earth. She gave birth to all the Titans, including Atlas, the name of our robot last year. The fact that Gaea is Greek keeps up the Greek theme with Atlas and Spartronics (Spartans). Gaea also ties into the recycling theme of this years game, Recycle Rush, as Gaea literally means Earth.

Elevator and Arm assembly working in tandem
by Aila Ikuse
During the long Pajama build Day, the mechanical team made a huge breakthrough; they completed and tested the Elevator and Arm assemblies and lifted our first tote. Soon we will be able to attach the lifting assemblies to the chassis (the base of robot that has the wheels) and start training our drive team. Check out the videos below to see the Elevator and Arm assemblies in action!

The Community Open House last year was a huge success with with over 250 people in attendance. This year's Open House is expected to bring twice as many people, so save the date! On Febrary 25th, from 5-7pm the community will have a chance to learn about the various subteams, the FTC teams at the middle schools, and see our new robot GAEA demo its skills. Light refreshements will be provided.
