Success all around for Spartronics
|
|
By Aila Ikuse
It's official: Spartronics Team 4915 competed at the Regional Championships recently and for the second year in a row -- also since our creation -- we are heading to the FIRST FRC World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri. We finished Regionals in 16th place, and are 20th out of the 150+ teams in the Pacific Northwest.
We are heading into overdrive to get everything ready for Worlds, which takes place April 22-25. Already we are making some design changes to the robot to make us more competitive, such as a "rake" to grab the coveted recycling containers from the landfill, which could give us a major advantage.
At Districts we also added stabilizers to the arms, which ensured that our tote stacks would not tip over and fall out, and they worked great.

4.9.15: Spartronics Day was a huge success

By Aila Ikuse
April 9th, 2015, or 4.9.15 which is as our team number, was the one day this Century that we could dedicate to everything Spartronics.
We contacted the mayor - who wrote an official proclamation making 4/9/15 Spartronics Day - and went to the city council meeting when they unanimously voted approve the proclamation.
We went to the school board, who fully supported Spartronics Day and paid honors to our team.
We wrote and performed a skit all about Spartronics Day during a schoolwide assembly on that day -- and we included our new Principal Mr. Fish! (He discovered us on Instagram and is already a fan.)
We also did a HUGE Community outreach - our biggest to date: We were stationed at five busy locations across the island, including Westside Pizza and Town and Country Markets who have supported us as sponsors from the beginning. We also were stationed at the Ferry Terminal, Safeway and Salty Dog Wash in Lynwood Center.
And we talked to people about Spartronics and STEM. We reached over 200 people, and even more over social media and received several major online donations.
In just 49 minutes and 15 seconds we raised over $3500, which is being used to send our robot to Worlds AND help start the first FLL (FIRST Lego League) program in our school district. FLL provides robotics for grades 4-8.
Our goal is to create a robotics pipeline, with robotics programs for all grade levels.
The community has been so supportive and vocal about starting robotics for younger kids, and we could not have made Spartronics Day a success without you.
As Coach Chee always says, "It takes a village to build a robot." Thank you!
